History - The Sinclair Era : 1884-1906

The Sinclair Mansion Newlyweds Thomas and Caroline Sinclair, moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1871. Mr. Sinclair began a meatpacking business and enjoyed ten years of success. In 1881, he suffered a fatal accident at the plant, leaving Caroline widowed with six children. Three years after her husband died, Caroline purchased ten acres of land and hired architects to design a new home for her family. The Queen Anne style mansion, then known as "Fairhome," was completed in 1886 and at a cost of $55,000, was the most expensive city improvement of its time.
