History - Servants

Servants Others besides Brucemore's owners called the estate "home." A large staff worked for the Douglases and some lived on the mansion's third floor or in the servants' duplex. With people to clean the house, care for the children, cook the meals, maintain the grounds, and do a host of other duties, the Douglases had time to pursue recreational interests and to become involved in their community. Often, the histories of estate owners remain while little is known about their servants. The children's nurse, Ella McDannel, kept a journal and scrapbooks documenting the activities of the Douglases and their staff. Her point-of-view brings another level of understanding to daily life at Brucemore.
